Mount Zion Award
The Mount Zion Award for reconciliation was founded in
1986 by Wilhelm Salberg, a Catholic priest from Essen (Germany), who died
in 1996.
The Award has been presented biannually since 1987 to individuals and
institutions who make an outstanding contribution to the enhancement of
dialogue between the different religions and cultures in the Holy Land
and of mutual understanding between Jews, Christians and Muslims.
October 28th was chosen as the fixed date for the presentation
of the Award because of the publication of "Nostra Aetate" on
October 28th 1965 by the Second Vatican Council. With this extraordinary
"Declaration concerning the relationship of the Church towards the
non-christian religions" the Catholic Church adopted a new attitude
based on respect towards Judaism, Islam and other religions.
